The past week had been absolute hell.

Greg sat on the front step of his porch, his mouth pulled into a tight line of irritation as he waited for Aislynn to return from scouting higher up on the mountain.

There was nothing Greg would like more than to find the warmth of Andrea’s arms and lose himself in her again, but both of them had been run ragged lately.

The land-ownership case was getting more and more heated with every passing day. Of course, the corporation had made the first move just a few days ago, attempting to file a plethora of “temporary” documents for logging rights. They argued that they were only asking for a small portion of the mountain, but Greg wasn’t stupid. He knew what they asked for today was only a stepping stone for what they’d want tomorrow.

And what they wanted was everything they could get their hands on.

The moment they had filed their documents, Andrea had counter filed, bringing all proceedings to a grinding halt over the dispute. Of course, the corporation couldn’t do any logging, but it had taken a considerable amount of resources on Andrea’s part to accomplish such a thing, and the effort had left her exhausted.

She was in her office until well after ten every night, which led Greg to conceal himself in his bear form, as close to town as he dared, to watch over her. Luckily, since his last little episode, Dennis hadn’t made another move. On certain days, Greg almost wished he would – it would be nice for him to let off a little steam.

Meanwhile, things among the blonde man’s family had gotten a bit rocky as well. Petty squabbles over safety and hunting rights had erupted, and several times he had to step in to make sure that his cousins didn’t rip one another limb from limb. On one occasion, Ivor had even threatened Kišux, something that had resulted in both the Lenape girl and Aislynn challenging him.

That had been a nightmare – and after that episode, Greg had begun to send the two young women on daily surveys of the mountain – just to make sure that the corporation wasn’t getting itchy trigger fingers. Their little trips also tended to keep them out of trouble – and gave everyone in the clan some breathing room.

Of course they were on edge, and Greg could blame no one for that. Whenever things came down to the wire – when machinery showed up and the threat became more real than imagined, things started to get out of hand. The elders feared for their lives and their legacies and arguments erupted almost daily.

The startling thing was that most of the clan’s men favored a more violent approach when it came to encroachment upon their land. When Greg’s father had been killed, they had been in favor of going down the mountain and ravaging the town until they found the responsible party. It was Greg himself who had kept them from doing something so unforgivable.
